Chief Deputy Sharon Joann Barnes, 48, was shot to death Monday, December 9, 2002, while trying to arrest a methamphetamine manufacturer and dealer, Earl Mitchell Forrest II, of Salem, Missouri.  Mr. Forrest was being arrested for murder and the manufacture of a controlled substance.  He was also suspected of shooting a man and a woman to death during an argument over drugs.   After the death of Chief Deputy Sharon Joann Barnes, he was charged with three counts of first-degree murder.  Chief Deputy Sharon Joann Barnes was the third woman officer in Missouri and the 188th woman officer in the country killed in the line of duty.  Chief Deputy Sharon Joann Barnes was the co-founder of the Lenox Rural Fire Department and its former chief.

In 2002 Drug Enforcement Administration stated they would assist rural law enforcement in their fight against the manufacture of illegal drugs.  We do not know if this has been done satisfactory.

Chief Deputy Sharon Joann Barnes was killed because she did not have sufficient trained back up to assist her.  It was just she and her partner making the arrest.   Earl Mitchell Forrest II was sentenced to death.

When you smoke your next joint, toot your next line or inhale crank, think of officers whose names are listed below.  It was your behavior that contributed to their deaths.
